Skyndex Privacy Policy
In short
Skyndex is an Android app that combines the forecasts of several free sources. There is no account, you give no name or e-mail address, and there are no ads. To get a forecast it uses only an approximate location (or the city you pick). That location is not combined with anything that identifies you.
What data is used, and why
| Data | Purpose | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate location (if you allow it) or the coordinates of the city you choose | To fetch the forecast, alerts and airport measurement for where you are | To our server, rounded to about 1 km. The server passes it on to the forecast sources (see below) |
| Microphone (when you use the voice assistant; and, only if you switch on "Wake with Hey Sky" in the settings, while the app is open on screen) | To understand questions like "Will it rain tomorrow?", and to hear the words "Hey Sky" | The audio is turned into text by the Android speech recognition service on your phone (on most phones, Google); that service's own privacy policy applies. Skyndex asks for the recognition to stay on the phone, which holds when an offline language pack is installed. Skyndex does not record, store or send the audio to our server. "Hey Sky" is off until you switch it on, listens only while the app is open on screen, and stops when you leave the app. Questions are answered on the phone |
| Calendar (only when you ask for it) | To put a plan item in your calendar when you choose "Add to my calendar too" or say so to the assistant | Skyndex opens your calendar app with the event filled in and you confirm it there. Skyndex has no access to your calendar and reads nothing from it |
| City search and place names | To turn the city you type into coordinates, and coordinates into a place name | Through the phone's built-in address service (on most phones, Google services). This does not pass through our server |
| Bluetooth permission (optional) | To use your Bluetooth headset's microphone, if you switch that on in the settings | Goes nowhere |
| Notification permission (optional) | Evening tip, alerts and plan reminders | Notifications are created on the phone; no identifier is sent to the server for this |
| Your plan, saved places and settings | For the app to work | Stay on your phone only. Uninstalling the app removes them |
Forecast sources and our server
Forecasts are combined on a server we operate (Cloudflare Workers). The server passes the rounded coordinates to these sources: MET Norway, Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), OpenWeather, WeatherAPI and, for places in the United States, the US National Weather Service (NWS). Airport measurements come from public METAR reports. These sources receive only the coordinates needed to give a forecast; they receive nothing that identifies you or your device.
Cloudflare, which hosts the server, may keep technical logs of requests (such as the IP address) under its own policy, as any internet service does. We do not use those logs to track users.
What the server stores
- Short-lived cache: a forecast for an area is kept for a few minutes.
- Rainfall log: to know how much rain fell in the last days, the hourly rainfall is kept per grid cell of about 25 km and deleted after 96 hours. It is not tied to anyone.
- Accuracy measurement: to see how well our forecasts hold, forecasts and real measurements for a few fixed airports are kept. This is not user data.
- There are no accounts, user IDs, advertising IDs, cookies or usage statistics (analytics). The app has no crash-reporting service either.
Deleting your data
Because there is no account, there is no record about you on the server to delete. You can remove the data on your phone by uninstalling the app or clearing its data in Android settings. You can turn off any permission at any time in Android settings; without the location permission you can choose a city by hand.
Security
All traffic between the app and the server is encrypted with HTTPS.
Children
Skyndex is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Notice
Forecasts can be wrong, and alerts in the app are not official warnings. For decisions about safety, follow the announcements of the official authorities.
Changes
If this policy changes, this page is updated and the date above changes.
